Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is recommended for children and teens who have been injured or who have movement problems from an illness, disease, or disability.

Physical therapists work to decrease pain and help children return to daily activities. Physical therapists teach exercises designed to help children regain strength and range of motion, and also show children and their families how to prevent future injuries.

Physical therapists use a variety of treatments to help build strength, improve movement, and strengthen skills needed to complete daily activities.

Physical therapists are skilled in assisting children and teens in the following areas:

  • measuring a child’s flexibility and strength
  • analyzing how a child walks and runs (the child’s gait)
  • identifying existing and potential problems
  • developmental activities, such as crawling and walking
  • balance and coordination activities
  • adaptive play
  • improving circulation around injuries by using heat, cold, exercise, electrical stimulation, massage, and ultrasound
  • flexibility exercises to increase range of motion safety and prevention programs
